Programmatic buyers rarely have the luxury of dealing with one campaign, one objective and one leisurely workflow at a time.

On any given day, you might be:

  • Optimizing several clients across different verticals.

  • Moving budgets between deals.

  • Solving delivery issues.

  • Preparing client recommendations.

  • Checking performance.

  • Looking for something genuinely useful to bring into the next conversation.

Sometimes you have a detailed brief and weeks to work with. Sometimes you have Thursday.

That distinction matters, because improving the creative experience on Connected TV should not always require a custom production schedule, a large committed budget or a month of planning.

Origin's Native CTV Ad Extension solution - Slingshot - was designed accordingly.

At its simplest, Slingshot places a 15-second native creative experience directly adjacent to an advertiser's existing CTV creative. Depending on the need, that experience can do anything from:

  • Simply pulling eyes back toward the television.

  • Putting the viewer into a relevant mindset.

  • Reinforcing a particular selling point.

  • Becoming a fully bespoke extension of the campaign itself.

For programmatic teams, the easiest way to think about it is through three questions:

  1. What are you trying to accomplish?

  2. How quickly do you need to act?

  3. How much do you want to put behind it?

In this article, we will guide you through Origin's quick-start framework - and how Slingshot ranges from same-day activations through to fully tailor-made executions that are hand-built around a specific objective, audience and budget.

You will see it broken out like this:

Focus: Same day. Attention, awareness, recall.

Prime: Next day. Context, engagement, consideration.

Prime+: 3–5 days. Message reinforcement, intent, favorability.

Tailor-Made: 21–28 days. Preference, education, activation and performance.

Focus: “I need this ad to work harder. Today.”

Typical lead time: Same day

Sometimes the brief really is that simple.

The client already has CTV running. Targeting is set. Creative is approved. The media plan does not need rebuilding.

They just want more people looking at the television when their ad starts.

Or perhaps competitive separation has suddenly become a concern. Maybe the client dislikes the possibility of its spot immediately following a competitor. Maybe the agency simply wants greater control over the immediate environment surrounding the ad.

That is where Slingshot Focus comes in.

Focus uses visually stimulating, unbranded games and content designed principally to regain attention before the advertiser's existing creative begins. There is no need to communicate a product message or even understand the nuances of the campaign. The job is simply to interrupt the familiar rhythm of back-to-back advertising and create a more attentive starting point for the spot that follows.

It also creates controlled content adjacency immediately before the advertiser's

creative, providing a buffer between that ad and whatever preceded it. Origin's retail case study describes the same mechanism as providing both separation from competing creative and protection from undesirable immediate adjacency.

Hypothetical scenario

  • A national retailer already has several million CTV impressions in market.

  • The campaign is performing adequately, but the client asks its agency a frustratingly simple question: “How can we help make sure people are actually paying attention to my ads?”

There is no new creative brief. No appetite for changing targeting. No time for production.

The agency routes a portion of its existing programmatic spend through a Slingshot-enabled deal, and Focus content begins appearing immediately before those existing ads.

That is it.

And there is real evidence behind such a simple intervention. In an Origin retail study measured using TVision, the advertiser's ad received an 84% lift in physical viewer attention when amplified by Slingshot versus the same ad running without it.

Origin/MAGNA Media Lab neuro testing also found that time to first fixation on the brand ad dropped from 0.11 seconds to 0.01 seconds when Slingshot was present. Put less scientifically: viewers' eyes found the ad approximately ten times faster.

For a programmatic buyer, that makes Focus less of a creative project and more of an immediately available campaign lever.

Prime: “Attention matters. But so does what they're thinking about.”

Typical lead time: Next day

Once attention has been addressed, there is another opportunity - context.

Slingshot Prime - contextually relevant primers

Slingshot Prime uses pre-built, vertical-specific content to place viewers into a relevant mental or emotional mindset immediately before the advertiser's spot begins.

The distinction from Focus is important:

  • A generic quiz might get someone looking at the television.

  • A travel quiz running before a hotel commercial can get them looking at the television while thinking about travel.

  • A food-related experience before a restaurant ad can make appetite relevant.

  • A cocktail-themed quiz before a whiskey ad can put the category into someone's head without simply starting the commercial fifteen seconds earlier.

It is subtle, but that is rather the point.

Hypothetical scenario

  • An agency has a global hotel advertiser buying CTV programmatically.

  • Nothing is wrong with the commercial. But it begins with beautiful footage of a resort, and the buyer wonders whether the ad could land differently if viewers arrived at it already thinking about getting away.

  • There is no reason to build something bespoke.

  • Choose (or request) an appropriate travel series from the Slingshot library, pair it with the existing creative and activate.

This is not theoretical. A global hotel advertiser using contextually relevant Slingshot content saw a 255% lift in physical attention compared with the same ad running alone.

In that execution, the content was deliberately used both to capture attention and to establish the right mental and emotional mindset before the hotel creative began.

We've seen the same principle work in very different categories. For a whiskey advertiser, cocktail-related content ran immediately before the brand ad. The result was a 241% increase in physical attention versus the advertiser's spot running by itself.

That makes Prime particularly useful when the requirement is less “say something additional” and more “make the audience more receptive to what we're already saying.”

Prime+: “There is one thing in this ad that we really want them to notice.”

Typical lead time: 3–5 days

This is where the creative starts leaning closer to the specific advertiser.

Prime+ takes an existing Prime series and subtly tailors its copy or premise around a keyword, product benefit or value proposition contained within the advertiser's creative.

It still does not need to become an overtly branded commercial. In fact, some of the most interesting executions do precisely the opposite.

Hypothetical scenario

  • Imagine a pickup truck advertiser whose new spot heavily emphasizes towing capability.

  • A standard Prime execution might ask viewers a generic automotive question: “What's your ideal road trip length?”

  • Prime+ might instead ask: “What matters most in a pickup?”

There is no logo. No model name. No claim lifted verbatim from the commercial.

But if the ad that follows spends thirty seconds demonstrating towing capability, something useful has already happened.

The viewer has been invited to think about the very consideration the advertiser is about to address.

Another hypothetical scenario

  • A national restaurant brand has one creative running everywhere, but its strongest promotional message is buried halfway through the spot.

  • The programmatic team doesn't want another ad. It wants to make the existing one land harder.

  • Prime+ could customize a food-themed quiz around value, sharing or convenience before the commercial begins, creating a subtle cognitive runway toward the selling point that follows.

That remains the fundamental difference between Prime and Prime+ today:

Prime understands the category. Prime+ understands what matters inside the ad.

Tailor-Made: “We have an actual problem to solve.”

Typical lead time: 21–28 days

At some point, speed stops being the priority.

The advertiser has a meaningful budget, a defined objective and enough time to ask a much more interesting question: What should the creative experience actually do?

This is where Slingshot becomes much closer to Origin's core business.

Instead of selecting or adapting an existing content series, Origin starts with the client problem and develops a purpose-built experience around the creative, audience strategy and desired outcome. The objective might be education, preference, activation, incremental sales, bookings or some other measurable business result.

Sometimes the answer belongs after the commercial rather than before it.

Sometimes it should wrap around it.

Sometimes different audience segments should receive different messages.

Sometimes the core ad has done everything it realistically can, and the extension exists to tell the story within the story that would otherwise remain unsaid.

Being as this is arguably Origin's most popular product, we have a vast library of examples, which you can see by clicking here.

Hypothetical scenario

  • A CPG advertiser wants its CTV investment to do more than generate reach.

  • Its agency has identified three strategically important audiences: loyal buyers, people who have lapsed from the brand and consumers currently buying competitors.

  • The objective is incremental sales.

Origin might develop a series of extensions that reinforce different purchase occasions, introduce useful product information, create a reason to engage via QR and map different creative messages to the appropriate audience strategy.

Measurement can then be aligned around the thing the advertiser actually wanted to change.

That is very similar to an Origin CPG campaign which was independently measured by NCSolutions. Purchase-based targeting identified lapsed buyers, non-loyals/switchers and competitive-brand buyers, while Origin created custom Slingshot extensions designed to move viewers from awareness toward purchase. The campaign produced an 11.8% incremental sales lift, compared with a cited industry benchmark of 2.7%, alongside $1.60 ROAS; 58% of incremental sales came from new, never or lapsed buyers.

That is no longer simply an attention tactic.

It is creative strategy, distribution, audience alignment and measurement working toward the same outcome.

The programmatic bit matters

It is easy to talk about creative technology as though every campaign begins with a blank piece of paper.

Programmatic teams know otherwise. They know that their campaigns are always in flux:

  • Budget changes.

  • Client makes requests.

  • Pressure to over-index on a certain KPI becomes the one and only priority

If you read the job description of an agency Programmatic Campaign Manager, it reflects that reality: the role combines strategy with hands-on execution and optimization, while also encompassing creative delivery, partner implementation, campaign QA, troubleshooting, measurement and the responsibility to surface new opportunities for clients.

Which is why the activation spectrum matters.

Not every good idea should require a brief.

Not every useful creative intervention should require a new IO, a substantial production process or thirty days of warning.

Equally, not every advertiser should settle for an off-the-shelf solution when there is a significant business problem and enough time to solve it properly.

The trick is knowing which situation you are actually in.

So, which Slingshot should you use?

The simplest version is probably this:

  • Need an immediate attention lift, controlled adjacency or competitive separation Start with Focus.

  • Want viewers thinking about the category before the commercial begins? Use Prime.

  • Want to reinforce something specific that the advertiser's creative is about to say Give us a few days and use Prime+.

  • Have a real objective, meaningful budget and enough time to build around it?

That is Tailor-Made.

Because for a programmatic buyer, the question should never really be “Do I have a Slingshot campaign?”

It should be “What is the client counting on me to improve, fix or deliver right now?”

That is where we have your back.
