Attention Isn't Captured; It Is Earned. How Creative Bridges Attention Signals and Meaningful Human Engagement.

The conversation around attention in CTV is moving fast - and in the right direction.
For years, attention was treated as something the industry vaguely hoped was happening somewhere between the first frame of an ad and the viewer’s sudden, inexplicable urge to check the weather in Nebraska. Now, thanks to companies like TVision, Iris.TV and the vision companies like Viant to bridge these essential capabilities, we are getting much better at understanding attention signals and how to build smarter media decisions around it.
So is that the end of the attention story? Is the problem of attention solved?
Not quite.
Because while these signals do indeed help tell you where these more attentive moments lie, they cannot reach into the living room, tap the viewer on the shoulder and kindly ask them to move their gaze from their phone screen to the TV screen.
This piece, arguably the final piece of the puzzle, rests on the only part of an ad campaign that can lay claim to ‘being’ in the room - your creative and the experience it’s delivering.
And in 2019, this was the problem Origin set out to solve.
How it all began
When we founded the company, our starting belief was simple: consumers had evolved, media had evolved, but TV ads had not. The living room is no longer a closed loop environment where everyone had a single place to glue their gaze to. The TV screen is now competing with phones, tablets, laptops, conversations, snacks, pets, group chats, door bells, microwave buzzers and whatever small domestic emergency had just developed in the kitchen.
The question was not only “did the ad run?” or even “was the ad viewable?” The question was: did the viewer’s brain actually return to the screen in time to process it?
That thinking was built into the DNA of the first product Origin brought to market: Slingshot.
In its earliest form back in 2019, Slingshot was designed to stitch and serve extensions directly before the brand ad. These pre-ad bumpers (known as Toppers) were designed to grab attention before the standard commercial began and shift the viewer’s mental and emotional state away from what they had just been watching, bringing them closer to the message the advertiser needed them to receive.
Here is an example of an ad break experience which includes an unbranded 15s ad extension running before a specific brand ad.
In other words, Slingshot was not just about getting eyes back on the screen. It was also about changing the immediate context around the ad - regardless of the show or movie being watched.
That distinction matters.
If someone has just been immersed in a comedy, a thriller, a cooking show, a sports documentary, or an episode of something involving dragons, lawyers or suspiciously attractive vampires, their mind is not automatically ready for a banking message, a retail offer, a healthcare reminder, or a new vehicle launch. There is a psychological handoff that has to happen.
This is why IRIS.TV’s mission around contextual intelligence has always felt so aligned with ours. Context is not a nice-to-have. It shapes receptivity. It helps determine whether a message feels like an interruption or a logical contribution. And when creative can account for that context, it has a much better chance of moving someone from passive exposure to active attention.
However, measuring the effectiveness of a Slingshot ad extension was vital, which is why one of the very first partnerships Origin forged was with TVision.
It is also why we submitted it for testing in the MAGNA Media Trials. The study found that extension TV ads could help standard video ads become just as engaging as TV content, with modified ads producing arousal scores much closer to programming than traditional ads alone. It also showed that when standard video ads were paired with Origin extensions, the ad was easier to process and engagement increased.
The same research showed stronger aided recall, stronger brand message agreement, and stronger brand preference when extension strategy was aligned with campaign goals.
One of the most important takeaways from that work was beautifully simple: by controlling the immediate context around the traditional TV ad, the game had started to change.
Where it got truly exciting
Before long, additional elements were added into the creative logic applied to these ad extensions - and before we knew it, new disciplines and formats such as Chasers and Bookends carried the ability for Slingshot to deliver not just attention, but an active lift in purchase consideration, brand preference and far, far more.
The industry is getting much better at identifying the perfect home and even the perfect moment. The next phase is making sure that the stories being delivered into these moments meet the needs of this new era of television.
Where others can ensure attention can be measured, modeled and optimized, our job at Origin is to make sure it is earned - and used.
