Relevance Is Not Personalization: The CTV Distinction Media Buyers Often Miss, But Need To Know.

Serve an automotive commercial to someone currently shopping for a car and you have done something intelligent. You have improved efficiency, reduced waste and made the campaign more relevant.

But you have not served a ‘personalized’ ad experience.

If every qualified household still sees the same commercial, the data has changed the delivery - not the creative.

Put more bluntly: if the ad didn’t change, it wasn’t personalized.

Relevance Decides Who Sees the Ad

Relevance is a media decision, and an intelligent one at that - albeit one that comes with its own caveats and best practices. For example, over-targeting is something that can genuinely disrupt the success of a campaign - as you can read here.

Targeting data helps an advertiser identify the households most likely to be interested in a product. In retail and CPG advertising, that might mean reaching:

  • Category shoppers.

  • Loyal customers.

  • Lapsed buyers.

  • Households approaching their likely replenishment window.

That is valuable. It is also increasingly fundamental to competent campaign execution - especially where performance-oriented outcomes such as ‘cost per store visit’ is being measured.

But calling it personalization blurs an important distinction. Targeting may place an advertiser in the right living room, but for personalization to be present in the strategy, it takes additional use of that targeting data to determine what the brand should say once it gets there.

In fact, this is how Origin's Creative Logic Engine was born:

Targeting data is one of many inputs required for effective creative personalization on CTV

Personalization Decides What Is in the Ad

Creative personalization begins when the signals used to select an audience also influence what that audience sees, hears or learns from the advertising.

Imagine a CPG brand identifying three valuable audiences: loyal buyers, lapsed customers and shoppers currently purchasing from a competitor.

Showing all three groups the same commercial would be relevant targeting. Tailoring the creative would be personalization.

Take for example this CTV campaign Origin ran for a nationwide CPG brand - what drove much of the success was the variation in narrative between shopper types.

Four-panel marketing dashboard shows sales lift 11.8%, ROAS $1.60, $60.53 per 1K impressions, and 58% new/lapsed customers.
Outcomes for a CPG client who layered personalized messaging into their creative to reflect customer type
  • The loyal customer might see a complementary product or an invitation to try something new.

  • The lapsed buyer might receive a reason to reconsider the brand.

  • The competitive buyer might see the particular product benefit most likely to change their mind.

The product is the same. The audience is broadly relevant in every case. But the reason to care is different.

Relevance gets the category right. Personalization gets the reason right.

Different Jobs - Perfectly Suited To Elevate One Another

The distinction between relevance and personalization is not an argument for choosing one over the other:

  • Targeting without personalized creative leaves the final mile unfinished.

  • Personalization without intelligent targeting risks delivering a beautifully tailored message to the wrong living room, diminishing the ability to resonate.

The two belong together.

Targeting puts the brand in the right room. Personalization gives it the right thing to say once it arrives.

This is particularly important in retail media, where brands and retailers possess exceptionally rich shopper signals. Purchase history, brand loyalty, product affinity, store proximity, local availability, household composition and previous advertising exposure can all help shape a more meaningful creative experience.

If that data is used only to determine who receives an impression, much of its potential remains stranded inside the media plan.

Carrying Retail Data Into the Creative

Creative personalization on CTV allows shopper and contextual signals to travel into the advertisement itself.

A single campaign can produce different messages for loyal and lapsed customers, highlight the closest store, respond to local weather, feature a locally relevant product or continue a story based on what a household has already seen.

Through dynamic creative optimization, dynamic overlays and native ad extensions, one core brand asset can become many purposeful variations without rebuilding the campaign from scratch.

That is what makes creative personalization at scale so powerful. It does not simply generate more assets. It uses data to make each variation more meaningful - and gives advertisers more opportunities to test, learn, refresh and optimize throughout the campaign.

For retail and CPG brands, this is the difference between reaching people who may be ready to buy and communicating why this particular product matters to them now.

From Relevant to Recognized

Relevant advertising says: This may be for you.

Personalized creative says: We understand why it may matter to you. That feeling of recognition is where targeting data becomes a creative advantage - and where ordinary relevance can become attention, emotion and action.

At Origin, we believe the future of CTV is not relevance or personalization. The future of successful CTV campaigns is relevance carried all the way through to the creative.

Because relevance finds the household - personalization meets it.
